Heart is king: 7 tips on how we can grow older healthily

The heart is the engine of our body. It beats an unimaginable three billion times over the course of our lives and pumps 250 million liters of blood through our circulation. No wonder if it sometimes loses its rhythm or shows weakness. In Austria, cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death in women over 65 and men over 45.

Heart problems can manifest themselves in different ways: the heart may skip a beat, the pulse suddenly races, the chest hurts, you suffer from shortness of breath or edema (water retention) in the legs. “For an initial clarification, you should have an ECG done by your family doctor. Afterwards, a long-term ECG and a cardiac ultrasound by an internist may be necessary,” says Primary Martin Martinek, head of cardiology at the Ordensklinikum Linz Elisabethinen.
