The new frontier of medicine meets fashion. Here is an apparently extravagant yet winning combination thanks to the project developed by ENEA in collaboration with the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome. The smart shirt that detects the heart rate and respiratory activity of patients.

Fiber optic sensors woven into the elastic fibers of the head facilitate clinical examinations. It was initially tested on sportspeople especially on cyclists during training. In sports medicine this innovation is particularly appreciated as it leaves the athlete free to make large movements without the impediment of traditional straps.

The possible applications of this innovation, however, are so many, in fact the doctors immediately highlighted the advantage of its use during magnetic resonances. We think of patients who suffer from panic attacks and anxiety crises. This examination has always represented an obstacle to medical analysis, due to its duration and particularity. Wearing a simple t-shirt, on the other hand, it will be possible to monitor heart rate and breathing so that you can intervene promptly if the patient feels bad. Furthermore, the optical fibers in the tissues, compared to traditional methods whose signals are disturbed by the electromagnetic field, facilitate the reading of the resonance itself.

Further developments of the project foresee the use of the smart shirt also during laser interventions for the removal of tumors. It will be able to monitor temperature levels. But humidity is also an extremely important parameter to control during forced ventilation for example.

Or think of a rehabilitation treatment to be carried out at home. The use of this “smart” T-shirt will allow you to effectively monitor the evolution of the therapy and the patient’s health.
