The Huvenhoopsmoor nature reserve is located on the northern edge of the Teufelsmoor in the Rotenburg district. The best way to discover the raised moor is hiking. The annual crane migration is also worth seeing.

Wide fields, extensive forests and unspoiled moor and heath areas characterize the region in the municipality of Gnarrenburg between Worpswede and Bremervörde. Typical are large clustered villages with old farms and kilometer-long rows of moorland villages with half-timbered houses on streets and canals. The scenic highlight is the 1,350 hectare Huvenhoopsmoor with the Huvenhoopsee. It offers an important habitat for rare animals and plants.

Watch cranes during migration

During the crane migration, the birds can be easily observed in the moor.

Every year in spring and autumn a special natural spectacle can be observed. During migration, thousands of cranes and other migratory birds fly across the country and also rest in Huvenhoopsmoor. The Moorturm, a covered observation tower in Forstort-Anfang, offers a good view of the moorland and cranes. With a bit of luck you can see animals looking for food.

On the circular hiking trail through Huvenhoopsmoor

The Moorhof Augustendorf provides an insight into the meager life of peat farmers.

A 14 kilometer long circular hiking trail, the Huvenhoopsmoor North Path, begins directly at the moor tower in Forstort-Anfang. Alternatively, you can start the hike in Glinstedt. Visitors can park their cars for free in both places. The route is signposted throughout with the logo of the Huvenhoopsmoor North Path, a white “N” on an orange background.

From the circular route you can make detours to several worthwhile destinations – to the moor adventure trail and Huvenhoopsee near Augustendorf (1.6 kilometers), to the historic Moorhof Augustendorf (3.9 kilometers) or to the main town of Gnarrenburg with its church and glass museum (6.2 kilometers).

Discover the raised moor on the moor adventure trail

From the moor tower there is a wide view of the Huvenhoopsmoor.

On the approximately 700 meter long moor adventure trail, various stations provide insight into the creation and cultivation of the moor as well as the flora and fauna. At three hands-on stations you can, for example, experience the moor barefoot or try your hand at moor ditch jumping. A viewing platform offers a beautiful view of the Huvenhoopssee, an important raised moor in the Teufelsmoor area.

A trip on the peat barge

The trips in the historic peat barge start from the peat ship harbor.

A popular excursion destination is the Torfschiffhafen at the Kreuzkuhle, a small harbor basin southwest of Gnarrenburg in the middle of the moor. The peat captains used to sail here to Bremen on their barges full of peat and came back from there with all kinds of goods. Today the Findorffs Heirs Association offers trips on the peat barge on the Kolbeck and the Oste-Hamme Canal. Several events a year also take place at the Torfschiffhafen, such as Peat Day or the Moorhafen Harvest Festival.

Moore Express: With the museum train through the moor

A nice way to discover the vast landscape is to take a ride on the historic Moore Express. Over a total of 99 kilometers, the museum railway connects Gnarrenburg and other places with Bremen, Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Bremervörde and Stade. The Moore Express runs from May to October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Bikes can be taken in the Kleinbahn’s bike trailer; reservations are recommended. From the Gnarrenburg train station and the Brillit station it is about ten kilometers to the moor adventure trail in Augustendorf.
