Dengue fever is a major public health problem in many tropical and subtropical areas of the world. It is a disease caused by a virus (there are 4 different serotypes of dengue virus) transmitted by mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti, which is why travelers to the affected areas – including Brazil – are recommended prophylactic measures against bites, for example through the use of repellents.
