Improving Visual Evaluation in Pediatric Patients: The Innovative Technology of Dive Medical

Dr. Victoria Pueyo, a pediatric ophthalmologist at the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, faced difficulty in obtaining reliable answers from children and patients with cognitive problems during medical examinations. In response to this challenge, Dr. Pueyo collaborated with two doctors in computer engineering to establish Dive Medical, a company dedicated to improving the visual evaluation of users.

The project, which was developed in partnership with the University of Zaragoza and the Aragon Health Research Institute, aims to facilitate quick and effective diagnoses for pediatricians and ophthalmologists. Dive Medical has developed an innovative eye tracker tool that is incorporated into a tablet. This tool captures the patient’s pupil movements and measures visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and oculomotor control. The incorporation of artificial intelligence has enabled Dive Medical to streamline the process of obtaining patient data.

Dive Medical’s eye tracker device has already been endorsed by Huawei, with the Chinese company financing an international project to test the tool on more than 6,000 people in several countries. The company has also begun developing new ophthalmological tests to detect pathologies such as autism.

While Dive Medical has received significant public and private funding, it has yet to turn a profit. The company is focused on expanding its operations within Spain and Europe by means of partnerships and distribution contracts. Additionally, Dive Medical plans to recruit 3,000 people to measure the efficiency of visual screening of patients in Zaragoza, Germany, and Finland.

Despite initial financial challenges, Dive Medical remains optimistic about its future and is committed to establishing itself as a key player in the health business field. Currently, the company’s innovative system is in use at hospitals in Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza. Follow @elpais_economia on Twitter for more information on Economy and Business.
