In Naples a 16 year old boy recovers his hearing – Medicine

Delicate deafness surgery at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, regional reference center for cochlear implants and cutting-edge implantological activity. A 16-year-old young man has recovered his hearing thanks to the implantation of a latest generation ‘OSIA’ prosthesis.

The operation was carried out at the Complex Operational Unit of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Colli Hospital, directed by Professor Giuseppe Tortoriello and was performed by doctors Giuseppe Barba and Rosa Grassia.

The patient, suffering from Franceschetti syndrome, a rare condition that affects craniofacial development, had an anomalous development of the jaw and the absence of the external ear.

Thanks to the innovative treatment, which offers a personalized solution targeted to the patient’s needs, the young man regained his hearing and was able to return to leading a normal life.

“It is the first time that this particular device has been used at Monaldi for the treatment of complex craniofacial conditions which allows us to ensure tangible improvements in the quality of life of patients” explains Tortoriello.

“Monaldi is a cutting-edge center for deafness surgery with the implantation of 22 bionic ears in the last year.

Furthermore, the results achieved for laryngeal oncological surgery are exceptional, and 54 patients from other regions have chosen the UOC directed by Professor Tortoriello to be treated”, is the comment of the general director of the Colli Hospital, Anna Iervolino .
