In Pinerolo, Buniva students occupy the gym: “No more truncheons on students”

Students at Michele Buniva Institute in Pinerolo Occupy Gym to Protest Meloni Government’s Policies

This morning, around a hundred students from the Michele Buniva Institute in Pinerolo gathered in the school gym for an assembly to discuss pressing issues affecting them. The primary focus of the meeting was on the policies of the Meloni Government that directly impact students.

The students expressed their concerns about the recent violent attacks on students in Pisa, Florence, and Catania, as well as the ongoing crisis faced by the Palestinian people. They voiced their frustration, stating that it has become all too common in Italy to see students being targeted and attacked, especially when they stand up against the government and its policies. The students condemned the authoritarian drift in the country, which they believe is supported by all political forces.

The assembly also touched on the tragic deaths of students during internships, referencing a specific incident in 2022 where three students lost their lives during mass mobilizations. The students highlighted the use of violent repression as a growing issue that not only affects them but also workers in other sectors fighting for their rights.

A significant part of the discussion revolved around the education reforms proposed by Minister Valditara, particularly the idea of reforming the conduct grade to make it easier to fail students based on their behavior. The students vehemently opposed this reform, arguing that it does not address educational needs and instead shifts the burden to public schools and families. They warned against using schools as avenues for corporate training at the expense of taxpayers.

In addition to local issues, the students also used the assembly as a platform to demand an end to the violence against the Palestinian people and to denounce the government’s alliances with the State of Israel. The assembly concluded with a united stance against the proposed school project and a call for change in both domestic and international policies affecting students.
