Initiatives to Address Growing Mental Health Disorders Among Young People in Spain

The Youth Barometer on Health and Wellbeing has revealed some concerning statistics about the mental health of young people in Spain. In 2022, 58% of the young population reported suffering from a mental health disorder, a significant increase from just 6.25% in 2017. To address this issue, the Princess of Girona Foundation, Saint John of God, and Zurich Foundation, with the support of Zurich Insurance, have implemented intervention programs in institutes to support the emotional well-being of young people.

Saint John of God and Zurich Foundation, in collaboration with Zurich Insurance, have launched the Henka program: Growing in Emotional Well-being. This program aims to impact more than half a million young people in Spain by 2025-26, focusing on the prevention and promotion of mental well-being in adolescents aged 11 to 16. The program seeks to strengthen resilience and promote social awareness.

On the other hand, the Princess of Girona Foundation has implemented the AmplificARTE program, using music and songs as tools to promote emotional well-being and develop new skills and values in educational settings. Both programs will collaborate to provide feedback and multiply their impact on beneficiary educational centers, as well as train teachers in emotional well-being interventions. The Generation Teachers program from the Princess of Girona Foundation and the emerging artists of the Art Generation program will join the Henka emotional well-being training sessions, providing teachers with additional tools to support young people in the classroom.

These initiatives aim to address the increasing rates of mental health disorders among young people in Spain, providing them with the necessary support and resources to improve their emotional well-being.
