The average purchase price for the MLS season opener between Inter Miami and Salt Lake on Wednesday night is approximately $185, which is a staggering 585% increase from Inter Miami’s home opener last year. During that game, tickets cost approximately US$27. The cheapest tickets for this year’s home opener are $95 per seat, marking a 1,257% increase from last season’s entry price of $7 a seat.
Messi’s entry into the MLS is also impacting prices for other teams in the league. The average price of a match this season is US$164, which is 124% more expensive than last year. Secondary ticketing website StubHub has seen MLS sales increase sevenfold compared to this time last year, with Inter Miami leading the pack as the most sought-after team in MLS.
“The increase in sales for Inter Miami, and the league as a whole, is a testament to his legacy as a soccer star,” said StubHub spokesperson Adam Budell. “Messi’s influence extends beyond the confines of his stadium, driving demand on the road, from buyers around the world and especially from his native Argentina.”
In addition to ticket sales, sales of Messi’s redesigned shirt also remain popular, with Soccer.com expecting it to be “among our best-selling items for 2024.”
