Negative feelings about your body, anxiety, depression. Instagram would be harmful for teenagers – especially girls – subscribed to the platform that has made images its distinctive trait and that has given a boost to the phenomenon of influencers. And Facebook knows this, as it has conducted internal studies over the past three years on how its photo-sharing app affects millions of young users, in constant comparison with others.
To reveal these documents is the Wall Street Journal, the same newspaper that days ago discovered a favorable treatment that the social media of Mark Zuckerberg reserves for a group of VIPs regarding content moderation.
“32% of teenagers say that when they feel bad about their body, Instagram makes them feel worse,” reads a slide presenting the internal research.
While another explains that “teens blame Instagram for the increases in the rate of anxiety and depression.” Another study shows that over 40% of the perception of not being attractive enough was born with the use of Instagra
m. The head of public policy, Karina Newton, explained that the company is finding ways to draw users away from certain types of content: “We are cautiously optimistic that these suggestions will shift the focus so far on the physical appearance of people.” The app, after various experiments, has recently also made the display of “likes” optional.
