Intermittent Fasting Might Not Be the Key to Longevity, Study Finds

In the ongoing battle against obesity, intermittent fasting has gained popularity as a simple and cost-effective solution. However, a recent study presented at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago suggests that this method may not be as beneficial as once thought.

The study, conducted by the Mario Negri Pharmacological Research Institute, found that individuals who practiced intermittent fasting, limiting their food intake to 8 hours a day and fasting for 16 hours, had a higher risk of death from cardiovascular events compared to those who ate for 12-16 hours a day.

Giuseppe Remuzzi, the director of the institute, commented on the surprising results, stating, “There is the idea that we need to change the way we eat, concentrating food intake in eight hours and then taking only water or little else for the remaining 16. We know that intermittent fasting has short-term benefits, but we need to consider the long-term effects.”

The study, which analyzed the eating habits of 20,000 individuals over an average of 8 years, found that intermittent fasting did not reduce the overall risk of death and may actually increase it. Furthermore, individuals with pre-existing heart disease or cancer who practiced fasting for even just 14 hours were found to have a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.

While the study has its limitations and further research is needed, the findings raise questions about the long-term effects of intermittent fasting on health and longevity. Remuzzi emphasized the importance of understanding the underlying biological mechanisms and the need for more comprehensive research in this area.
