Good morning ma’am, recent studies suggest that schizophrenia has a strong genetic component. It has been seen that the genes involved in this disease are different, but the mutations identified, taken individually, are not sufficient to cause schizophrenia. Only if these mutations are present simultaneously and in significant numbers do they constitute a risk factor for the disorder.
We cannot therefore speak in terms of “certainty” but only of “risk” and certainly the family members of schizophrenic patients have a risk of developing the disease up to 10 times higher than the general population. This risk, however, is reduced as the degree of kinship decreases.
