Is Your Old Mattress a Health Hazard?

Did you know that a mattress that is too old could be dangerous for your health? His age, in fact, is a detail not to be overlooked.

Many are convinced that sleeping on a mattress that is even decades old does not constitute a particular problem. Indeed, at times they seem to trust in the “service status” of an instrument that has cradled their deepest dreams for so long.

However, things are not exactly like this: when we talk about mattresses, length of service matters very little. On the contrary, the older they are, the more likely they are to cause health problems for the people who sleep on them every night. Exactly so, this habit can pose several dangers. The mattress, in fact, should be changed after a certain number of years (obviously variable depending on the conditions in which it is found).

The seniority of the accessory in question is not negligible, given that it is strictly associated with the quality of our sleep. Which is to say an essential element of our existence, being responsible for balancing most of our bodily functions. In the opinion of many experts, the conditions of the mattress on which we rest our heads every night can negatively influence our rest.

It means little or nothing that the mattress still appears to be in good condition, even after 20-30 years of using it. This does not imply at all that it is actually in optimal conditions. Furthermore, it is scientifically proven that mattresses are too old can amplify health problems such as rhinitis, bronchitis or sinusitis.

But not only that: according to some physiotherapists, an old mattress can also lead to complications of muscular and orthopedic origin, no longer being able to adequately support the weight of the spine or neck area. Its average duration should never exceed 5-10 years of “life”. A variable time, naturally, depending on the way in which the instrument is used and maintained.

Cleaning shouldn’t be neglected either: the mattress every 15 days it should be cleaned thoroughly and we should proceed with its rotation, a procedure that serves to reverse the points subjected to the main pressures of our body. This way we will let it resume its original shape.

There are also behaviors that are not recommended by experts so as not to shorten the “life” of our mattress. For example, it is better not to jump on it or sit on its edges. The litmus test, however, can be obtained when we notice that at night the mattress no longer makes us sleep as well as it used to and we find it difficult to fall asleep. In this case, we can be sure that the time has come to send it into “retirement” and replace it with a new one.

Remember, your mattress plays a significant role in your sleep quality and overall health. Be sure to regularly check its condition and consider replacing it after 5-10 years for the best rest possible.
