The war in the Middle East continues unabated and with possible developments that will change the face of the territory even more. Israel has in fact informed Egypt that it intends to launch a military operation to take control of the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. This is what the Wall Street Journal reports, citing Israeli and Egyptian officials. The plan would see Israel take control of the Rafah border crossing and position its troops along the so-called Philadelphia Corridor that separates Egypt and the Palestinian enclave, while Israeli forces would continue to operate inside the Strip. Israeli officials reportedly sought to allay Egyptian concerns that the operation could cause accidental damage in Egypt.

The report explains that Israeli leaders say Tel Aviv wants control of the area to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons into the Gaza Strip, but Egypt is concerned that such an operation could challenge the existing peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, which limits the number of soldiers each country can station at its borders. Israel has not yet authorized the mission, and its timing depends on negotiations with the Egyptian government, which is trying to broker a new hostage release deal with Hamas.
