José Manuel Vaquero Barrios appointed as head of Pulmonology Service at Reina Sofía University Hospital in Córdoba

The General Directorate of Personnel of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) has officially announced the appointment of José Manuel Vaquero Barrios as the head of the Pulmonology Service at the Reina Sofía University Hospital in Córdoba. This appointment was reflected in a resolution published in the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía (BOJA).

Born in Córdoba, Vaquero Barrios trained as a doctor specialized in Pneumology at Reina Sofía itself. He has been a specialist area physician (FEA) in Pulmonology since 1998, initially at the Infanta Margarita Hospital in Cabra (Córdoba) and later at the Queen Sofía Hospital in Cordoba.

Vaquero Barrios has been actively involved in various areas of pulmonary medicine, including thromboembolic disease, cystic fibrosis, and creating the Chronic Bronchial Infection Unit. He has also been a leader in the Lung Transplant Unit since 2006 and has continued his work in cystic fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension.

Furthermore, Vaquero Barrios is a collaborating professor at the University of Córdoba and a member of various scientific societies, including Neumosur, Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (Separ), European Respiratory Society (ERS), and Spanish Transplant Society (SET).

He has also been actively involved in research projects, including studying cytomegalovirus in lung transplant patients and evaluating the impact of liquid biopsy in advanced cancer.

Overall, Vaquero Barrios’s appointment as the head of the Pulmonology Service at Reina Sofía University Hospital highlights his expertise and contributions to the field of pulmonary medicine.
