Kim Jong-Un oversees North Korean artillery exercises amid tensions

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un oversaw artillery exercises aimed at strengthening his country’s combat readiness, state media reported on Friday. The exercises come shortly after Pyongyang vowed to take corresponding military actions in response to joint maneuvers by South Korea and the United States, which North Korea views as a rehearsal for invasion.

The artillery exercises on Thursday involved front-line units with the capability to reach the South Korean capital, Seoul, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Kim emphasized the importance of these units being able to quickly and accurately carry out their missions in real battles.

North Korea’s long-range artillery units pose a significant threat to Seoul, a city just 40-50 kilometers from the border with North Korea. The North Korean Defense Ministry announced plans for “responsible military activities” in response to the joint military drills between Seoul and Washington, which are set to conclude on March 14. Kim visited a training site in western North Korea and called for enhanced combat capabilities.

The joint drills between South Korea and the U.S. include computer-simulated command post training and 48 types of field exercises. North Korea perceives these exercises as a security threat and preparation for potential attacks. However, officials in Seoul and Washington have emphasized that the exercises are defensive in nature.

North Korea has significantly increased its missile test launches in recent years, aiming to develop more powerful nuclear-capable weapons capable of reaching South Korea and even the continental United States. Amidst this, experts believe North Korea may seek concessions in the form of aid from the U.S. once diplomatic efforts resume. Pyongyang’s weapons tests and war rhetoric may intensify, particularly in light of upcoming elections in the United States and South Korea.
