Focus on Animal Welfare and Avian Influenza Management of the Latin American Poultry Summit at IPPE 2024

WORLD – The Latin American Poultry Summit, held as part of the International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) 2024, showcased discussions on important issues related to animal welfare and avian influenza management.
Dr. Catya Itzel Martínez Rivas, subregional representative of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) for Central America and the Caribbean, spoke about the organization’s mission to develop international standards for animal health and welfare. She also discussed the importance of assisting national efforts in implementing these standards. Dr. Martínez highlighted WOAH’s upcoming 100-year anniversary and emphasized the organization’s commitment to global animal health.
During her lecture, Dr. Martínez also provided an overview of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), which is aligned with the “One Health” approach. The organization focuses on standards, transparency, solidarity, food inequality, and the promotion of veterinary services. Dr. Martínez emphasized the collaborative nature of WOAH, with 183 member countries working together to adopt and implement standards for animal health.
Another key topic of discussion at the summit was the management of avian influenza in Brazil. Dr. Sula Alves, technical director of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), outlined the specific measures that Brazilian poultry farmers have implemented to prevent avian influenza since 2000. This includes adherence to biosafety standards, prevention measures, and disease awareness.
Gary Flory, a consultant with GA Flory Consulting LLC, discussed the use of composting as a method for disposing of dead birds. He emphasized the importance of qualified composting experts in carrying out this process and highlighted the benefits, including low cost, simplicity, and speed of disposal.
The Latin American Poultry Summit provided valuable insights into animal welfare and disease management practices in the poultry industry, fostering discussions on best practices and innovative solutions.
