Many people are familiar with chapped lips, especially in the cold season. Applying cream protects – but this means that some of the lip care is swallowed. The EU Commission’s Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety has calculated how much: Anyone who uses lip care every day consumes up to five lipsticks a year. Stiftung Warentest tested 26 lip care products for their contents.
The majority – 19 products – can be easily recommended. These also included six declared natural cosmetic products. The price range is wide – consumers can spend up to 22.71 euros for 10 grams. At 1.30 euros per 10 grams or 1.25 euros per twist pen, the “Balea Sensitive Lip Care” from DM and the “Aveo Lip Care Classic” from Müller are the cheapest.
Not recommended: Lip care with critical mineral oil components
In seven products – for example in the lip cream from Bepanthol or the lip balm from Vaseline – the consumer advocates found mineral oil components: so-called Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH), MOSH-like hydrocarbons or both. These are viewed critically because they can accumulate in the body. It is not yet clear what long-term consequences this has, which is why consumer protection advises against lip care products containing these ingredients.
The all-clear was given for those four lip care products that contain titanium dioxide according to the ingredient lists. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), titanium dioxide could damage the genetic material or promote the development of cancer if it enters the body via the gastrointestinal tract. The substance, which has been banned in food since summer 2022, could not be detected in any of the lip balms and lip balms.
Is lip care addictive?
According to consumer protection, it is false that lip balm products are addictive. The care products make the lips feel supple. Without this care, they can quickly feel dry and brittle. That’s why many people choose the products again and again.
The test did not examine how well the tested pens and creams care.
