Long Waiting Lists and Short Staffing: The Struggle of Santiago Apóstol Hospital in Miranda

Santiago Apóstol Regional Hospital Faces Overwhelming Waiting Lists in Several Specialties

The Santiago Apóstol Regional Hospital, serving thousands of people from Miranda and its surrounding areas, has been struggling to keep up with demand, resulting in the generation of long waiting lists, particularly in the specialty of Internal Medicine. Data from the Ministry of Health reveals that at the end of the 2022 academic year, there were 130 patients awaiting consultation, but within just twelve months, that number has soared to almost 240, with an average wait time of about two months. This marks the largest number of users waiting for an appointment in the last five years, indicating a significant increase in demand for the hospital’s services.

The primary reason for the doubling of the Internal Medicine waiting list is a lack of staff. While the department has eight positions, only five are fully covered, with one professional on sick leave and two vacancies. Health officials are working to expedite the resolution of these staffing issues, but it is clear that the hospital is currently understaffed.

In addition to the Internal Medicine department, the Digestive specialty has also experienced a significant increase in its waiting list. In December 2023, 214 people were awaiting appointments, with an average delay of almost three months, compared to less than 170 individuals and a 50-day wait just a year prior.

These delays have left many residents, like Ángel from a small surrounding town, frustrated with the treatment they are receiving from the hospital. Ángel recounts his experience of facing delays in receiving an appointment for a crucial colon examination, highlighting the impact these delays can have on his health. He also expresses disappointment with the hospital’s response to his concerns, stating that they indicated that if something were to happen, he should seek help at the emergency room.

The growing waiting lists and delays in consultations at the Santiago Apóstol Hospital are a concern for both patients and health officials. As the hospital works to address staffing shortages and streamline services, residents are left hoping for timely and effective medical care.
