Lupus nephritis, what it is and why early diagnosis is important

Lupus nephritis is a frequent and severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE, a chronic systemic autoimmune disease, which mostly affects young women of childbearing age. In Italy, SLE affects approximately 25,000 patients and of these a percentage ranging between 25 and 60% will unfortunately also develop Lupus Nephritis which, if diagnosed late or not treated adequately, can lead to end-stage renal disease causing It is necessary to resort to more invasive treatments such as dialysis or even a kidney transplant.

The unmet needs of patients with lupus nephritis but also of clinicians themselves are many and this is why the Panel Project was born, an acronym which stands for ā€œAdvanced Care Pathways for the treatment of patients with lupus nephritisā€. This is a project conceived by Nume Plus and carried out with the patronage of the Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR), the Italian Society of Nephrology (SIN), the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services of Healthcare Companies (SIFO) and the Gruppo LES Italiano OdV (Association for the rights of patients with SLE) with the non-conditioning contribution of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Italy Srl and GlaxoSmithKline.

In this video, Gian Domenico Sebastiani, president of the Italian Society of Rheumatology and Director of the UOC Rheumatology of the San Camillo ā€“ Forlanini Hospital, and Sandro Feriozzi, director of the UOC of Nephrology and corporate dialysis of the local health authority of Viterbo and member of the Italian Society of Nephrology, explain what ā€˜is lupus nephritis, how can it be treated and what are the critical issues to address.
