The new president Prof. Dr. Lars Schaade initiates reforms at the Robert Koch Institute: Another unit will provide information about infectious diseases in the future.

If another pandemic occurs, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is well positioned. This primarily includes the electronic reporting system for infectious diseases, to which hospitals and laboratories in Germany as well as doctor’s practices transfer their data. This system already existed before Covid-19. “But doctors were not yet bound to it,” explains the new RKI President Prof. Dr. Lars Schaade in an interview with the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”.

At the beginning of his term in office, Schaade is currently redistributing responsibilities. As part of this, part of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) will be relocated to a new institute – the Federal Institute for Prevention and Education in Medicine, or Bipam for short, which will provide information about infectious diseases in the future. The RKI is still responsible for collecting and evaluating the data associated with the diseases and assessing the respective situation.

Cross-sectional studies planned

The RKI also operates other monitoring systems that are independent of the test frequency. This includes, for example, GrippeWeb, in which every citizen can take part. Additionally, cross-sectional studies on a representative group of the population are planned. “Such a panel should be launched in the next few months. We initially want to recruit 30,000 volunteers, whom we will regularly survey and examine. In this way, we will find out how frequently a particular pathogen occurs in the population,” says the RKI. President of the “Apotheken Umschau”. To do this, participants can, for example, send so-called dried blood samples, which the RKI analyzes in the laboratory.
