Male sexual function: do muscles improve after age 45?

### A Swedish study reveals the importance of muscle strength and sexual function in men over 45

The University of Bergen in Sweden recently conducted a study that sheds light on the correlation between muscle strength and sexual function in men over the age of 45. The research found that maintaining muscle strength is crucial for better sexual function and can help reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction.

The study, which analyzed data from the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe (RHINE) study and included responses from 2,116 men aged 45 to 75 from Norway, Iceland, Denmark, and Estonia, examined various factors such as age, body mass index, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking in relation to sexual function. The results showed that while these factors can increase the risk of sexual dysfunction, maintaining muscle strength can mitigate these risks.

Anders Flataker Viken, one of the authors of the study, emphasized the importance of addressing risk factors such as high BMI, hypertension, smoking, and diabetes to maintain sexual function as men age. Smoking, in particular, was highlighted as a significant factor that can worsen sexual function.

The study also found that maintaining muscle strength through physical activity is the most significant protective factor for sexual function in men. Respondents who were able to prevent a decline in muscle strength showed better results in terms of sexual function. This correlation between muscle mass and erectile function suggests that the musculoskeletal system may indirectly protect blood vessels and erectile tissue structures.

In conclusion, the researchers recommend incorporating high-resistance training to maintain muscle strength in the clinical treatment of middle-aged and older men who experience declining sexual function and erectile dysfunction. By addressing these factors and maintaining muscle strength, men can potentially extend their sexual activity well into their later years.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of muscle strength in maintaining sexual function as men age and underscores the significance of addressing risk factors such as smoking for overall health and well-being.
