PISA. Very serious mourning in the world of Pisan medicine. Doctor died yesterday Antonio Lepri, a well-known Pisan ophthalmologist, medical director at the University Ophthalmology Unit of Pisa. He was 63 years old. He was born in the city on January 3, 1958. He was struck down by a cardiac arrest. A sudden illness Saturday night while he was in his home. The hospitalization was immediate, but despite the medical care for the professional there was very little to do and his heart stopped beating yesterday. A sudden death, a bolt from the blue, which aroused deep condolences throughout the Pisan medical community. Doctor Lepri was in fact very well known in the shadow of the Tower.

Son of an ophthalmologist and brother of the doctor Paola, also an ophthalmologist, was a point of reference in the hospital sector.

Kind person, always ready to advise his patients, he leaves a good memory in all those who knew him and were able to appreciate his professional skills, as well as his profound humanity. Antonio Lepri after attending the Galilei classical high school in Pisa he graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa in 1985, obtaining a specialization in Ophthalmology in 1989. But he had never stopped studying and updating. His knowledge and experience acquired in the field had in fact allowed him to publish in national and international journals. But not only. Dr. Lepri was the founder of a multidisciplinary medical journal entitled “Forum Medici” and the “Rivista di Oftalmologia”, sharing his editorial activity with that of scientific director of the journal “Ophthalmological therapy updates”. Since 2000 he has also been an adjunct professor of the Postgraduate Schools of Neurology and Neurosurgery as well as in the Degree Course in Neuro Therapy and Psychomotricity of the Evolutionary Age and lecturer in the subject in the teaching of Diseases of the Visual Apparatus in the Specialized Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery, as well as lecturer in the course for opticians at the Galileo Institute of Pisa.

THE MEMORY

To remember him with deep condolences are the colleagues of the Ophthalmology operating units and the Department of Surgical Specialties of the Pisan University Hospital. «His research interests – write his colleagues – have been aimed at the study of ocular pharmacology, the neuro-ophthalmological mechanisms of amblyopia and finally the introduction of nanotechnologies and new materials for ophthalmic and optical use. His main clinical interests have been anterior segment surgery with particular interest in refractive surgery, ophthalmoplastic and ocular adnexal surgery, Basedow’s ophthalmopathy and pediatric ophthalmology. His death leaves us all an insurmountable void, and in all those who have known and appreciated his professional skills and his profound humanity and dedication to patients ».

TRAINING

Dr. Lepri, we said, in his long professional career, has never stopped studying and updating. His course of study was in fact very articulated and introduced him to the analysis of many medical disciplines, attending as an internal student the Institute of Microbiology, the Institute of Pharmacology and the Institute of Endocrinology of Calambrone of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Pisa. A path that led him towards the end of the Eighties to specialize in Ophthalmology and to provide civil service at the Italian Blind Union of Pisa in which he performed visual screening in all nursery and elementary schools in the province of Pisa for a total of 14,620 children. During his training he has participated in numerous international conferences and has attended courses in Italy and abroad regarding Pediatric Ophthalmology, Ocular Pharmacology, Endocrine Ophthalmopathy, Anterior Segment Surgery with particular interest in Refractive Surgery.

The last farewell to Dr. Antonio Lepri is scheduled for today at 4 pm at the new cemetery of the Misericordia in via Pietrasantina in Pisa. –
