Melanoma and vaccine: who is the first Italian woman to receive it

Michela Bresciani, a 45-year-old woman from Riva del Garda, in Trentino, has become the first Italian woman to enter phase III of the clinical trial for the melanoma vaccine being conducted in Naples. The vaccine is a product of Moderna, an American biotechnology company, and is currently being tested by the Pascale Institute in Naples, directed by Paolo Ascierto. Michela’s journey with the vaccine began after she was diagnosed with melanoma last summer, which was initially mistaken for an ear infection. The unusual size and location of a mole in her ear led to suspicions and eventually the diagnosis of melanoma.

Through her determination and research, Michela managed to secure an appointment with Professor Ascierto, who subsequently planned an operation for the removal of lymph nodes and the reconstruction of part of her auricle. This led to her participation in the immunotherapy program and the clinical trial for the melanoma vaccine. The vaccine, based on the same technology used for COVID-19 vaccines, aims to support the immune system in recognizing and attacking the tumor more effectively.

Despite the uncertainty of whether she received the vaccine or a placebo, Michela remains hopeful and determined to fight for her recovery. She makes regular trips to Naples for immunotherapy and remains focused on her goal of healing and bringing her daughters to New York. Professor Ascierto emphasizes the importance of positive thinking and its potential impact on the effectiveness of treatments.

Michela’s story, her resilience, and her trust in science serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Her willingness to participate in the clinical trial represents a crucial step towards understanding the effectiveness of the melanoma vaccine. As she continues her journey, Michela remains steadfast in her determination to defeat melanoma, for the sake of her daughters and herself.
