Unicef Delegation Meets with Italian Health Minister to Advocate for Children’s Mental Health

ROME, MARCH 06 – A delegation from Unicef met with the Italian Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, in Rome today to discuss the importance of supporting the psychosocial well-being and mental health of children and adolescents. During the meeting, the Unicef delegation delivered over 21,000 signatures collected for the petition “Health for the mind of children and adolescents.”

The delegation, consisting of Regina De Dominicis, Nicola Dell’Arciprete, Paolo Rozera, and Andrea Iacomini, highlighted the need for collaboration in implementing the Child Guarantee action plan, with a specific focus on mental health, disability, and sexuality education. Unicef offered technical support to implement mental health programs and activities, emphasizing the importance of addressing regional disparities and ensuring access to primary services.

The delegation also stressed the importance of addressing child poverty and social exclusion, especially in Southern Italy, and highlighted the need to improve access to health services for young refugees and migrants in Italy.

Unicef Italy presented Minister Schillaci with a request to update the list of Newborn Screening Pathologies and proposed the implementation of the “Together for Breastfeeding” program to promote and support breastfeeding culture nationwide.

The meeting between Unicef and the Italian Minister of Health underscores the commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents, especially those facing social and economic challenges. (HANDLE).
