Museums digitized to win over the public. But the elderly knot remains

Postponed for two years due to the pandemic, the bilateral Italy-France organized by the respective national committees of Icom (International Council of Museums), by the French agency for the internalization of the economy, took place in Rome, at Palazzo Farnese in March. French, Business France, with the collaboration of the Institut Francais on digital in museums, a theme that takes on a different value in Italy now with the explosion of a leading phenomenon in museum management, at the center of one of the Italian actions of the PNRR. Let’s retrace the course of the meeting.

After the institutional greetings, a round table coordinated by Juliette Raoul-Duval, president of Icom France, presented different uses of the virtual experimented in two French museums. The first, implemented by the Musée des Beaux Arts in Lille in a recent exhibition, Experience Goya, used the virtual in an immersive solution, adding to the traditional illustrative texts, a dose of sensationalism that usually characterizes budget-conscious virtual exhibitions and little to the educational and museological aspects.

More usual is the presentation of the Mucem in Marseille, with the digital museum subscription project, not a new solution, but here following the study of the paying public, and included in an integrated project with the door-opening subscription to museum services and loyalty of the local public.

In the debate, one of the critical issues of the topic was highlighted, that of the elderly public not accustomed to the use of digital tools, overcome here by the provision of accompanying tutoring.

This was followed by an illustration of the activity by the French firms. Among these, it seemed particularly interesting for the wide range of action and for the projects carried out Agp – Art graphique & patrimoine, a pioneer in the field of digitized cataloging, augmented reality, and as-built Building Information Modeling, used in the reconstruction of sites. Unesco in Syria and Afghanistan and now in Paris, in the restoration of Nôtre Dame after the fire of 2019.
