The feeling of nervousness in the legs is the symptom that people with restless legs syndrome describe. Although not as well known, this disease affects a relatively large portion of the population, around 10%. It causes a feeling of restlessness in the legs, the moment we decide to let them rest, therefore when we lie down on the bed and on the sofa.
For this reason, it is a syndrome often linked to sleep, as it occurs during rest and often compromises the ability to sleep. This is the most annoying aspect of the syndrome: making sleep difficult, it has consequences on the quality of life. Another aspect to which we must pay attention, however, is the connection with other diseases, among all with Parkinson’s. Nervous legs that cannot find rest could be the antechamber to this brain disease, according to studies, but not always. Let’s see when we need to worry and what the other causes of this annoying disease can be.
A very common syndrome, but the cause of which we often do not understand
Restless Legs Syndrome is far more common than people think. It consists in the feeling of restlessness in the legs, which seem to want to move continuously, without finding peace. Symptoms come when we try to rest, preventing us from doing so. The causes of this disease are widely debated in medicine. We must distinguish between two main cases. The first case is when the disease is called idiomatic, that is, when it is not possible to trace it to a specific cause. The second case is that in which the disease is called secondary. This is the case where, instead, the restless legs syndrome is the wake-up call for another pathology that awaits lurking. Among these pathologies, there is also Parkinson’s. The link exists, but it is not always the case to be alarmed in advance.
Nervous legs that cannot find rest could be the antechamber of this brain disease
The link between restless legs syndrome and Parkinson’s is overt, but it’s not always true. There are many other conditions that can lead to restless legs syndrome of a secondary nature. Among these: diabetes, iron deficiency anemia, renal failure, amyloidosis, celiac disease, uremia. In any case, it is good to take action from the first symptoms. For this reason it is recommended to carry out an MRI scan to avoid brain problems. It will be up to our doctor to direct us and prescribe the best treatment for our case.
