New volcanic eruption in Iceland, state of emergency declared

Photogallery – Iceland, new volcanic eruption: an entire city evacuated

In Iceland a new vulcanic eruption occurred Sunday morning, southwest of the Icelandic capital Rejkyavik. The public security department of the national police said that state of emergency. L’eruptive activity regained strength on the Reykjanes Peninsula, much further south than on December 18th. In Sundhnúk, north of Grindavík, a crack has currently opened and is already getting longer. Sundhnúk is located on a watershed so it is unclear where the lava might flow.

The Icelandic city of
Grindavík was completely evacuated shortly before four in the morning (3 in Italy) due to the new volcanic eruption and immediately after 6 the intervention team was ordered to leave the area. The eastern part of Grindavík remained without electricity. Geoscientists believe that the magma may be located directly beneath the city.
