Ecmo Mobile Ambulance Saves the Life of a Baby Girl
A few weeks old baby girl became the first patient to board the Ecmo Mobile ambulance of the Cuore Monasterio hospital in Massa, and her life was saved thanks to the quick response of the medical team and the advanced equipment on board.
The little girl, originally from the Pistoia area, fell ill on January 4th, and was diagnosed with Covid and respiratory syncytial virus, which caused severe lung complications. Despite being initially treated at Meyer hospital, her condition worsened, prompting the doctors to alert the Ecmo Team of the Massa hospital.
On January 5th, the baby girl was transferred to the Cuore hospital in Massa and admitted to intensive care, where she was intubated for several days. After testing negative for Covid and the flu virus, her lungs slowly regained strength, and she was eventually extubated and transferred to the pediatric hospital. Finally, on January 25th, she was discharged and able to return home.
The success of this life-saving operation was made possible by the Ecmo Mobile ambulance, which is specifically designed to accommodate the pediatric Ecmo team of the Cuore di Massa hospital and its essential equipment for the implantation of the heart-lung machine. The new ambulance was donated by the Rosa Prístina Foundation and had its inaugural trip with this little girl.
The mother of the baby expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s incredible – I saw a real team in action, very quickly. The ambulance arrived, numerous people got out, they had backpacks, equipment, they took care of my little girl. I thank them infinitely.”
The Ecmo Mobile ambulance has proven to be a crucial asset in saving the lives of patients in critical condition, and the successful outcome of this case is just one example of the impact it can have in providing timely and effective medical care.
