The number of oncological surgery operations represents one of the most reliable indicators of healthcare facilities: the higher the number, the better the guarantees of safety and effectiveness. In this context, the North is always at the top of the rankings for ‘above threshold’ centers, while the South is growing, but with only 3 virtuous Regions, Puglia, Campania and Sicily, which cover all the pathologies considered.
This is underlined by Ropi (Rete Oncologico Pazienti Italia), which today presents a new updated map ‘Where do I get treatment?’, to the Ministry of Health and developed starting from the data of the latest National Outcomes Program of Agenas.
For breast cancer, the first three centers in terms of number of operations are the European Institute of Oncology – Ieo in Milan, with 2635 operations per year, the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome with 1344 and Irccs Istituto Clinico Humanitas with 879, but it also appears the South in the top ten with the Humanitas Istituto Clinico Catanese which has 719.
For lung cancer, the Sant’Andrea Hospital of Rome with 572 operations per year, the European Institute of Oncology – Ieo of Milan with 538 and the Careggi University Hospital of Florence with 462, but among the first the South also figures ten, with the Monaldi Hospital in Naples with 292.
For stomach cancer, the first three facilities in terms of number of operations are the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome with 142 operations per year, the Aoui in Verona Borgo Trento with 89 and the Irccs San Raffaele Hospital in Milan with 88.
For colon cancer, the Gemelli Polyclinic with 505 operations per year, the Irccs Policlinico Sant’Orsola of Bologna with 288 and the Pisa University Hospital with 248, but in the top ten also include the Policlinico of Bari with 206 and the Cardinal Giovanni Panico Hospital of Tricase (Lecce) with 202.
For prostate cancer, the Careggi University Hospital of Florence stands out in the first three positions with 726 operations per year, the European Institute of Oncology – Ieo of Milan with 509 and the Pederzoli Clinic of Verona with 473, but among the top ten there is also the Miulli Regional General Hospital of Bari, with 309.
