Meyer Aicardo Narváez Ochoa: A Xaverian Doctor Dedicated to Service

Growing up in a family of doctors with a strong humanistic view of the profession, Meyer Aicardo Narváez Ochoa always knew from a young age that he wanted to be a doctor. His desire to help those in need led him to join the Valle del Cauca Sectional Red Cross at the age of 15, where he participated in campaigns focusing on community resilience, especially with young people.

After graduating from school, Meyer decided to study Medicine at Javeriana Cali, drawn to the university’s humanistic training and comprehensive academic program that aimed to understand health dynamics, particularly from a public health perspective. His training at the university, along with his work experience, led him to become the national leader of Comprehensive Management at the Colombian Red Cross. In this role, Meyer focuses on providing comprehensive healthcare for the country’s vulnerable populations, drawing on his knowledge as a doctor and his postgraduate degree in Public Health.

Meyer’s responsibilities include providing medical care to rural communities and populations lacking access to health centers, such as migrants and victims of the armed conflict. He believes that health services should be decentralized and made accessible to remote populations. Throughout his professional journey, Meyer has emphasized the importance of humanized service, seeing patients as individuals with dynamic health needs.

Drawing on his Xaverian training, Meyer encourages new generations of doctors to cultivate humanity in their professional practice and understand the complex social dynamics influencing patients’ health. His empathy and understanding have fueled his aspiration to work for the International Federation of the Red Cross or Red Crescent, where he hopes to continue promoting global health and serving populations affected by conflicts in other countries.
