“New Project in Abruzzo to Combat Childhood Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk”

CHIETI – A new project tackling the issue of obesity and cardiovascular risk in pediatric age has been launched by the Mother and Child Department, led by Francesco Chiarelli. The project, coordinated by Cosimo Giannini, aims to screen and prevent obesity in children in the Abruzzo region.

With obesity becoming a significant public health concern globally, the project will focus on implementing preventive strategies to combat the condition, which can lead to complications such as fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and psychological disorders in young individuals. The project, lasting two years, will involve primary schools in the four provinces of Abruzzo.

The study will include an anthropometric evaluation using 3D Body Scanners and a cardio-metabolic evaluation with cutting-edge instruments. Genetic analysis of metabolites and genes related to obesity will also be conducted by the CAST (Centro Studi e Tecnologie Avanzate) under the supervision of experts.

The multidisciplinary team consisting of pediatricians, dieticians, physiotherapists, and psychologists will provide standardized educational and behavioral programs, including dietary plans and physical exercise sessions tailored to each individual’s needs. Giannini emphasized the importance of the collaboration between the National Health Service, schools, and universities in addressing the issue of childhood obesity and cardiovascular risk in Abruzzo.

The project offers a promising opportunity to tackle the prevalence of obesity and its related health risks in the region, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in preventive healthcare for young individuals.
