This Wednesday, February 14, as part of the celebration of heart month, a new event comes to the ‘Optimize your Cardiovascular Health‘ campaign of the Medicine and Public Health Magazine, from the Cardiovascular Center of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, an event which will bring together distinguished specialists in the field of cardiology, who will address issues related to women’s cardiovascular health, heart failure and the peripheral vascular disease.
On this occasion, the protagonists of this event will be Dr. Norma Deravie, clinical cardiologist; Dr. Rafael Calderón Rodríguez, clinical cardiologist specializing in Heart failure and Heart Transplant; Dr. Arturo Medina, cardiologist and professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico; Dr. Damián Grovas, interventional cardiologist.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in women. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 3 women die each year from this cause, according to the organization ‘Go Red For Women’. Furthermore, many of these deadly conditions turn out to be largely preventable through education and healthy lifestyle changes.
In some cardiovascular diseases, the symptoms in men and women tend to be different. In charge of this space will be Dr. Norma Deravie, who will explain the main differences in the presentation of these conditions, as well as their impact during pregnancy, management of heart diseases based on the hormonal phases of the woman, among others.
Heart failure and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Led by Dr. Rafael Calderón Rodríguez, this intervention will provide details on the diagnostic criteria of these conditions, as well as the types of heart failure prevalence, incidence, risk factors and treatment.
Heart failure It is one of the main complications of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease characterized by widening of the heart muscle. Heart failure It occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, causing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or, in more serious cases, life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias or sudden heart failure.
Peripheral vascular disease
Finally, Dr. Damián Grovas will be defining the peripheral vascular disease, the factors that lead to the diagnosis in a patient, as well as the therapeutic approach to this condition and the complications that can lead a patient to undergo a minimally invasive intervention.
It is important to note that if this condition does not receive adequate treatment, there is a significant risk of compromising the blood supply to the affected limb, which could lead to its loss.
