The issue is not new, however gruesome. What has now emerged, however, casts an unprecedented look at a chilling reality: for 35 years, from 1980 to 2015, China allowed the removal of organs for transplants from death row inmates –
with or without their consent.

And – reveals a study originally published in the scientific journal American Journal of Transplantationand signed by Israeli surgeon Jacob Lavee with Australian researcher Matthew Robertson (who also wrote about it in the Wall Street Journal) – very often the medical procedure began even before the condemned was “executed” according to the procedure provided for by Chinese law.

In other words: “It was the doctors themselves who took the life of the prisoner with their scalpels.”

The authors conducted their research on 3,000 documents in Chinese drawn up by the doctors themselves carrying out the “operations”: over 300 professionals who have completed their task in 56 different hospitals in the People’s Republic.

The details that have emerged are on the verge of tolerable, with descriptions of the interventions written in scientific and yet revealing terms. “Often – write Lavee and Robertson – it is the surgeons themselves who explain how the patient was still alive at the time of surgery, and that the detachment of the beating heart was the reason for the immediate death».

This is because, it is explained, the detailed medical report shows that the man or woman on the couch “breathed autonomously” before the incision with the scalpel.

As is known, the Hippocratic Oath is very clear that a doctor cannot cause “voluntary” harm to the patient.

Furthermore, the ethics on organ harvesting, as recognized internationally (and also signed by China), imposes strict rules before allowing the procedure: one of these establishes that the patient must not be able to breathe on his own but it must be connected to a mechanical fan.

China said it has banned these practices since 2015. But, the authors argue, “it is highly probable that this kind of operations, considering the statistics and the short waiting times for transplants in the People’s Republic, are actually continued clandestinely».

And that, above all, they are focus on a particular type of prisoner, Falun Gong sect members and Xinjiang Uyghursa minority that for years has denounced the attempts at “genocide” against him.

The WHO, however, has long since closed the case against China: on the contrary, the World Health Organization has adopted Beijing’s “suggestions” to combat illegal organ trafficking and, Lavee and Robertson conclude, “attacked our research »on the subject. Now, tests in hand, it will be more difficult.
