People who exercise sleep much better

A large-scale international study shows that those who exercise several times a week are less likely to have sleep problems. Data from the “European Study on Respiratory Diseases in Adults” in nine European countries were analyzed. More than 4,300 people between the ages of 39 and 67 took part. The results were published in the specialist journal “BMJ Open”.

It turned out that the athletic participants had fewer problems falling asleep, struggled less with sleep disorders and also got the recommended six to nine hours of sleep every day.

Why muscles are so important

Those who were consistently active were 55 percent more likely to sleep normally, and those who became active over time were 21 percent more likely to sleep normally. The analysis did not determine why regular exercise improves sleep. It is known from previous studies that exercise not only makes you tired, but also reduces stress levels, which especially helps you fall asleep. Sleep disorders are a growing problem in Austria. Across all age groups, 25 to 30 percent suffer from sleep disorders, with women being affected more often. Around one in three women under 30 is affected, and over 60 it is more than two thirds (72 percent).
