The Medicines Commission of German Pharmacists (AMK) has examined how this regulation affects drug therapy safety (AMTS) and thus patient safety. “Indicating the dosage on a prescription has been a long-standing demand from pharmacists, for example to reduce patients’ lack of knowledge about their medication,” said AMK Chairman Prof. Dr. Martin Schulz.
The AMK surveyed its 588 public reference pharmacies in autumn 2023; 318 took part in the survey. Around 44 percent of the pharmacists surveyed confirmed that the AMTS had improved (a lot) through prescription dosing. This makes it possible to check the required pack size or check whether the dosage form can be divided. However, the crucial prerequisite for this is that the dosage information is correct and up-to-date.
Around 78 percent also stated that this dosage information made it possible to identify (potential) medication errors, such as overdosing or underdosing or incorrect time of administration. “Pharmacists carefully check the dosage information on a prescription and thereby identify risks, which can then be countered in consultation with the prescriber or the patient,” says Schulz.
