Developed by the homonymous startup founded by the Genoese Guglielmo Schenardi and the Belgian John Arts, Rita aims to simplify access to personal data in possession of the giants of the Web, providing an integrated service capable of collecting and storing people’s information directly on the smartphone, scattered among the main platforms. Once the data has been downloaded from the online accounts, Rita organizes them into graphs and lists that are easy to consult and understandable even to non-experts. Also the request to remove information is simplifiedautomating the emails to be sent to advertisers who profile people through the Google and Facebook platforms.

Rita was born from an idea developed by Schenardi and Arts while they were still fellow students at the Escp Business School. Today the startup is based in Amsterdam and has 6 employees of 6 different nationalities who are involved in development, graphics and marketing. The two founders take care of the business development part directly: “John and I have always followed issues related to privacy and data protection – Schenardi had told us a year ago – The arrival of the GDPR was an important turning point, but we realized that being able to visualize your data and understand how to really ask the various companies to remove what they knew about us remains a process within the reach of few. With Rita, on the other hand, we want to democratize this step, and allow everyone to regain control of their personal information ”.

The one million euro round will allow the startup to expand the workforce, perfect the digital infrastructure of the service and work on growing the user base. The interest in Rita is transversal and goes beyond pre-seed financing: the company can already count on advisor of the caliber of Roy Vella, former head of PayPal Europe, and Debra J Farber, former AWS security and privacy officer. Rita’s long-term mission is “to foster an ethical relationship between users and the giants of the Web”, favoring a market in which everyone can directly control their data and also derive direct benefits from the use made of it by the big platforms: ” Our next step will be connecting people with companiesmaintaining first-rate privacy and user control – explained Schenardi – The parties, trusting each other, will obtain greater benefits than those of today “.
