The Dominican medical community is set to receive a new resource in the form of the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Medical Terms. The dictionary, a collaborative effort between the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain and various medical academies in Latin America, Spain, and Portugal, will be presented at a scientific conference in the country on February 9 and 10. This initiative, which has seen the involvement of Dominican doctor and researcher Herbert Stern, aims to facilitate communication between medical professionals and the general population in Spanish-speaking countries.
Containing over 70,000 terms with their English equivalents, the dictionary will be available online for free, providing an updated and comprehensive resource for the Spanish-speaking biomedical lexicon. The launch of the dictionary will take place at the IV Dominican Hispanic Conference on Ophthalmology, where a dedication will be made to the late Dr. José Silié and Nelly Díaz, and a conference on “Science and art” will be given by Spanish professor Dr. Enrique Santos.
The event will also feature national and international specialists, including Spanish neurologist Ventura Anciones and neuro-ophthalmologist Enrique Santos. Dr. Herbert Stern, director of the Santo Domingo Ophthalmological Clinic and the organizing entity of the conference, announced that the scientific agenda includes 14 conferences and a course endorsed by the Dominican Academy of Medicine, the Dominican Society of Ophthalmology, and the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University. This collaboration aims to enhance the medical knowledge and communication among professionals in the Spanish-speaking medical community.
