Sanitary Degrees in High Demand: Medicine Takes the Lead

Santiago – In an annual trend, Medicine continues to be the most sought-after degree among students applying to the ABAU. The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) has seen between 3,500 and 4,000 applicants for the upcoming 2023/2024 academic year. Due to the high demand for physicians, the number of places available in the Medicine program has been increased from 360 to 403. This degree maintains its position as the most popular in Galicia, as it is only offered on the Santiago campus and boasts high employability.

Other health-related degrees also remain in high demand at universities in Galicia. Nursing is the second most sought-after degree, with 2,500 to 3,000 applications for 150 available places in Santiago. Alongside Nursing, other degrees like Psychology and Pharmacy have received between 2,000 and 1,500 applications each, with a respective number of available places at USC.

Another popular choice among Galician and neighboring autonomous community students is Veterinary Science, with 110 places available at the USC Lugo campus. The degree’s popularity is further enhanced by a lower admission cutoff grade compared to other nearby faculties.

While health-related degrees top the list, educational degrees rank as the second most sought-after by students. Primary Education, for example, has received between 1,000 and 1,500 applications at USC Santiago. This program is also offered at A Coruña, Pontevedra, Lugo, and Ourense campuses. Early Childhood Education is another highly requested degree within the educational branch, with a demand of 500 to 1,000 applicants.

The Galician Inter-University Commission (CiUG) will publish the first list of admitted students from the regular call of the ABAU today. Successfully admitted students will be able to enroll from tomorrow until Friday, with the second list scheduled to be published on Saturday.
