SEMICYUC Launches Research Unit to Promote Multicenter Studies in Intensive Medicine

The Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC) has announced the launch of a new strategic project called the Research Unit. This initiative aims to promote and facilitate quality multicenter research initiatives in Intensive Medicine services across Spain.

Intensivists will have the opportunity to propose projects and initiatives to the Research Unit, which will then involve its Advisory Committee and other specialists in the field. The Research Unit will also recruit other Intensive Medicine Services interested in participating. President of SEMICYUC, Carola Giménez-Esparza Vich, highlighted that this initiative will allow intensivists to significantly enhance their research projects and studies with the support and advice of experts from various areas.

The Research Unit will focus on making multicenter work more accessible and promoting research in Intensive Medicine services to improve outcomes for hospitalized patients. President of the Scientific Committee of SEMICYUC, Juan Antonio Llompart Pou, emphasized the importance of promoting network research in Spanish Intensive Medicine services through multicenter clinical trials.

SEMICYUC will provide logistical support for new projects, including the use of the REDCAP platform for data management and digital and in-person support for meetings. The Advisory Committee will offer specialized methodological support through the Technology Assessment and Research Methodology Working Group of SEMICYUC and the journal Medicina Intensiva to ensure the quality and applicability of the research results.

Llompart Pou also stated that establishing SEMICYUC as a society that promotes multicenter studies in critically ill patients is crucial for researchers to be eligible for competitive financing with greater guarantees. The goal is to create a stable multicenter research network in the medium term.

Projects launched through the SEMICYUC Research Unit must adhere to certain requirements such as having a research protocol, a financial report, and approval from the Ethics Committee. The results of these projects will preferably be presented at the National Congress of SEMICYUC.

Overall, the Research Unit is a significant step towards advancing research in Intensive Medicine services in Spain and improving outcomes for critically ill patients.
