Gelsenkirchen – It’s a season to forget for the defender. Former Schalke player Joel Matip tore his cruciate ligament at Liverpool FC in December and has been out ever since. He is currently in rehab. It is likely that the 32-year-old will never play for the “Reds” again.

Because the contract of the former FC Schalke 04 homegrown player ends on June 30, 2024 in Liverpool. From England it is said that the defender would like to stay with the “Reds”, but the club is planning differently.
With the departure of coach Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool FC, the club wants to make some changes to the squad. So Joel Matip is about to be eliminated. But there are already two people interested in the central defender.

Due to the end of his contract in Liverpool, former Schalke player Joel Matip could leave the club for a free transfer. Both clubs from Rome are currently still fighting to enter international business. It could be the 32-year-old’s last major contract (more on former S04 stars at RUHR24).

And at the same time, Joel Matip is following the developments at his former club FC Schalke 04. Quite a few fans would probably like to see the central defender, who died in 256, return Competitive games (23 goals, 14 assists) for the S04 professionals.
But despite all the ties, a move from Joel Matip to second division club FC Schalke 04 seems utopian. Similar to what is the case with ex-S04 star Max Meyer, whose contract with FC Luzern expires in the summer.
Joel Matip was a regular at Liverpool FC until his injury in December. A transfer to Italy to look for another challenge would therefore be more likely. But first the German-Cameroonian has to get fit again. And nothing can be completely ruled out in football anyway.
