Senator Humberto de la Calle Hospitalized for Heart Problems
Senator Humberto de la Calle has been hospitalized due to cardiac complications, according to sources close to the senator. The decision to admit him to a medical center in Bogotá was made after his cardiologist recommended a change in his treatment for better health management.
The senator’s hospitalization came after experiencing discomfort and undergoing a thorough examination by his attending physician. Although his health condition did not deteriorate, it was deemed necessary to monitor his response to the new medications and dosages prescribed.
Following a final check-up on Tuesday morning, it was determined that there were no significant changes in Senator de la Calle’s condition, leading to his discharge later in the day. He has been advised to take complete rest in the coming days.
This is not the senator’s first health scare. In 2022, he fainted minutes before a session in the Congress of the Republic, subsequently requiring medical attention. Since then, he has been under the care of a cardiologist, who recently recommended a change in medication to improve his health.
Senator Humberto de la Calle is a prominent figure in Colombian politics. He played a crucial role in the successful peace process with the Farc, signing the agreement as one of its architects. He also ran as a presidential candidate in 2018, previously serving as the National Civil Status Registrar and a magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice. Additionally, he held the position of Minister of Government during César Gaviria’s term and served as Vice President of the Republic under Ernesto Samper’s administration. Currently, Senator de la Calle holds an independent seat in the Senate for the 2022-2026 term.
