This is not a small problem, to be overlooked or laughed at. But the consequences can also be very serious
Indeed, “paid noses” are being recruited in Campania. The latest found by the governor Vincenzo De Luca, which is causing great political controversy and beyond. Yet, did you know that smelling that others don’t smell is a disease?
A disease that we hope they are not suffering from the olfactory detectives that the Campania Region is recruiting to discover the causes of the miasmas that have been poisoning the air in some areas of the territory for years, especially in the so-called Terra dei Fuochi. They will be recruited by the Environmental Agency of Campania, which intends to establish a list of “odor examiners” to support an Olfactometry laboratory set up in Caserta for the scientific analysis of the phenomena that exasperate the residents.
A decision dictated by the fact that last summer the situation worsened, to the point of provoking street protests from citizens who, especially in the Giuglianese area, complained of not being able to keep the windows open despite the scorching heat.
Now we are looking for “noses” to be used as a support tool for investigations on miasmas. Odor examiners will be engaged in three-hour sessions, and paid in proportion to the hours in which they perform service in the laboratory. For this purpose, explains the Agency, an olfactometer is used: the instrument dilutes the air samples taken in the field and distributes them to the panel of analyzers, which will have to express its “olfactory evaluation”.
The disease of odors
In short, you will need superfine noses. With the hope that they are not affected by “phantosmia”. According to some recent scientific studies, this is the name of the tendency that some would have to smell odors that others, on the other hand, are unable to perceive.
The survey was carried out on over 7,000 patients aged 40 and over. And the outcome is not encouraging. Suffering from phantosmia, in fact, is not something to be underestimated. It is not just a peculiarity that we could define almost goliardic and picturesque. Because the research revealed a strong correlation between this trend and cardiovascular conditions and the presence of cholesterol in the subjects investigated.
Basically, those who smelled “different” that others did not, had the highest cholesterol. And, as we know, this index should not be underestimated, as well as the risk of stroke that hypertensive people have who, in many cases, also suffer from phantosmia.
In short, this is not a small problem, to be overlooked or laughed at. The advice we give you, as we always do when we talk about health, is to contact doctors and experts for any doubts and suspicions about your physical condition.
