Shock injury for Sofia Goggia, fear of fracture of tibia and fibula. A training session at Ponte di Legno was fatal

Bad news from the Pontedilegno-Tonale slopes. On the morning of February 5, Sofia Goggia reportedly fractured the tibia and fibula in her right leg. The accident occurred around 10.30 am along the Casola nera track in Ponte di Legno, not far from the border with Temù. The champion from Bergamo was training in preparation for the giant slalom event in Soldeu (Andorra). After first aid, she was taken away by air ambulance. The athlete, as is easy to imagine, appeared exhausted and distraught.

«I didn’t see clearly what happened – Luca Agazzi, Sofia Goggia’s coach, says bitterly – because I wasn’t at the scene of the accident. Tried it? Yes it was a good period, he was skiing well and when you fall like this in training there is always a lot of anger.”

The Italian Winter Sports Federation intervened in the matter and, at the moment, calls for “prudence”: “Sofia Goggia fell during a giant slalom training session held on the Casola track in Ponte di Legno, putting her right leg on a door that turned to the right. No diagnosis has yet been made by the FISI Medical Commission which will carry out the necessary checks in the next few hours.”
