Extraordinary City Council Honors Bergamo Athletes

BERGAMO CITY – In an extraordinary session of the Bergamo City Council on Wednesday evening, 8 May, fifteen individual athletes and ten teams from six sports clubs were honored with the “The City of Bergamo to its Athletes” Award. The event aimed to show the municipality’s support for athletes who have excelled in their respective sports and to highlight the importance of lesser-known sports.

President of the municipal council, Ferruccio Rota, emphasized the role of sports in promoting positive values such as sharing, solidarity, friendship, and peace. “Sport is a training ground for commitment, growth, correct and fair play to be brought into everyday life,” he stated. The families of the young athletes were also present at the ceremony to celebrate their achievements.

Regional undersecretary with responsibility for Sport and Youth, Lara Magoni, highlighted the importance of sports as a right that society should strive to protect and promote. She commended the athletes and their families for their dedication and commitment to sports.

Sport councilor of the Municipality of Bergamo, Loredana Poli, emphasized the need to introduce sports projects dedicated to basic motor aspects in primary schools. She praised the resilience of the sporting community during challenging times, such as the recent pandemic, and stressed the positive impact of sports on society.

The event also featured a speech by Don Andrea Pedretti, parish priest of Roncola, who underscored the cultural significance of sports. He shared the success story of the Nerio Marabini Sports Library in Seriate, which houses a vast collection of sports literature and memorabilia.
