Street View, the functionality of Google Maps which allows you to see streets, cities and attractions directly from the platform, turns 15. Along with some news, there are also rankings that tell the most clicked museums, artistic sites and beaches in Italy last year.
The idea of Street View came directly from the mind of one of the co-founders of Google, Larry Page: since 2007, Google cars equipped with a camera and that any of us have come across at least once in our lives somewhere in the world, have captured and shared the impressive amount of 220 billion images and have traveled more than 10 million miles (the equivalent of 400 laps around the world), mapping more than 10 million locations in 87 countries.

The most clicked museums and cultural sites of 2021
In the first places, in terms of Italian museums and archaeological sites, there are the Roman Forum, Juliet’s house (Verona) and Palazzo Pitti (Florence); the Top Ten continues with the Doge’s Palace in Venice, the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Historical Museum and park of Castello di Miramare in Trieste, the Uffizi Galleries (the most visited site of 2021 with 1.7 million tickets sold), the Egyptian Museum in Turin and finally the Ferrari Museum in Maranello and Palazzo Vecchio, also in the Tuscan capital.

As for the beaches, people consulted Street View to discover the beauties of the Due Sorelle beach in Sirolo, on the Conero Riviera (Ancona), of Tuerredda in Teulada (Cagliari) and of the Carezza lake in Nova Levante (Bolzano), which make up the podium. Followed by Cala Violina in Scarlino (Grosseto), Cala del Leone in Livorno, Lazzaretto beach in Alghero, Ghiaie beach in Portoferraio, on the island of Elbaand finally the coast of Tropea, in Calabria, the port of Civitavecchia and La Playa in Castellammare del Golfo (Trapani).
Street View’s goal was to build a 360-degree map of the whole world: to date, as mentioned, there are over 220 billion images that allow us to better understand where we are going or to observe dreamed destinations, in a continuous balance. between concreteness (how is the door I have to enter?) and desires (I want to see the most beautiful beach in Thailand). On the occasion of the birthday, Alphabet has unveiled some news regarding Street View.

The news: new camera, time travel and Immersive View
The first is a new, more compact camera for mapping and photographing the world, which will help Big G to “collect high-quality images. in more places ”, as a note goes. It is an ultra-portable system that is roughly the size of a cat, weighing less than 7 kg. It is modular, it can reach remote islands, mountain peaks or in the heart of the Amazon and precisely incorporate, as needed, components such as the Lidar (i.e. laser scanners) to collect images with even more useful details, such as road signs or holes. Best of all, it can be mounted on any vehicle with a roof rack – even Google partners around the world will have greater ability to take 360-degree shots in more places.
Another novelty is the ability to time travel: also on mobile, i.e. on iOS and Android, the option See other Dates arrives on any photo. That command will show historical images of that place in Alphabet’s possession, obviously starting in 2007.
But Google uses Street View for other purposes as well. For example, to update commercial or road information: in the last 3 years, artificial intelligence has made it possible to carry out over 25 billion map updates. The functionality is behind Live View, i.e. real-time navigation with the phone’s camera, and also Immersive View, which will arrive later this year, a sort of hybrid map-model resulting from billions of Street View and aerial images for create a rich digital model of places around the world.
