Sustainability in hospitals: recycled anesthetic gas and artificial intelligence

For the Upper Austrian Health Holding (OÖG), sustainability is an essential pillar of the business strategy. Therefore, projects are constantly being developed at the various locations in order to save resources.

At the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Kirchdorf, anesthetic gas is filtered and recycled using a state-of-the-art system. The gas exhaled by patients during an operation is passed through an activated carbon filter and can therefore be recovered. To illustrate: The amount of anesthetic gas produced during a seven-hour operation is about as harmful as a 1,500-kilometer car journey (around 0.4 tons of CO2).

Artificial intelligence supports not only in medical areas, but also in building control. Ventilation and heating in the training center in Steyr are optimized by a self-learning AI. 30 percent of energy can be saved in these rooms every year.

Since 2.2 million lunches are prepared in the OÖG hospitals every year, careful handling of food plays a crucial role. By participating in the national “United Against Waste” initiative, food waste is actively avoided – through careful menu planning, little overproduction and awareness-raising.

The “HospiCycle” conception project has been carried out since 2021 in order to be able to recycle packaging that is made of high-quality plastic and meets high hygienic criteria through single-variety collection.

The OÖG combines the Kepler University Hospital and the Salzkammergut, Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen, Freistadt, Rohrbach and Schärding clinics.
