Dandelions are less welcome in most gardens, as they mean the unwanted dandelions will soon multiply even more. But the faded dandelion blossoms are just perfect for decorative purposes – if you know how to preserve them. And this is how really unique decorations are created, which are also wonderful as gifts. We will show you how to make a decoration with dandelion in a jar yourself and how to conserve the flower at the same time.
From dandelion to dandelion and straight into the jar
Even as children, we quickly noticed that dandelions are quite sensitive and fall apart at the slightest touch or breeze. So how come you can get the whole baubles in jars and even pour resin over them for decorations? The trick is quite simply to pick the flowers on time. Or to put it another way: if the feathery seed balls have already formed, it is too late. So you have to catch the period between flowering and seed formation.
You can read in this article what you should pay attention to. There you will also find other variants with which you can preserve dandelions.
Make dandelion in a glass yourself
You need a support so that the faded flowers can later stand upright in the mason jar. You should get the following things in advance:
- Slightly opened, withered dandelion flowers
- thin wire
- pebbles
- beautiful mason jars or a glass bell
- Other decorations such as moss or dried flowers are optional
Make decorations and preserve flowers
- First cut the dandelions into the right lengths so that they fit into the mason jar. If you combine several in one glass, it is best to cut different lengths so that the group looks more interesting and natural.
- Now cut a longer piece of wire. This must be long enough to reach the flower head and to be able to be wrapped around a stone at the other end.
- Once you have inserted the wire into the flower, wrap the other end around a pebble several times so that the flower appears to be standing upright on it.
- Place the stone with the flower on the lid of the jar. Now you can add more decorations if you want. The whole thing will look particularly natural if you cover the stone with moss and hide it so that the wire is no longer visible.
- Carefully put the glass over the flower arrangement and screw it on if necessary.
Now all you have to do is wait, because in a few days the flower heads will open completely and form balls. Since they were not picked when ripe, the seeds will also be more stable. In addition, the glass protects them from the wind, so you can enjoy your DIY dandelion decoration for a long time.
If this craft idea leaves you wanting more, you can find a few more ideas in this article. For example, you can make a dandelion paperweight simply by using epoxy resin. Or how about a wish-granting dandelion? Again, you can make a necklace by pouring just the seeds in resin or displaying them in mini vials.
