The Power of Touch: Research Shows Physical Contact is Beneficial for Health

Consensual physical contact has been found to have numerous health benefits for individuals of all ages and genders. A group of European researchers reviewed over 200 specialized studies and concluded that activities such as hugs, massages, and caresses can reduce pain levels, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and even help newborns regulate cortisol levels and gain weight.

The study, published in the journal Nature Human Behavior, found that the type of contact and the person delivering it did not influence the positive effects. Whether it’s a family member or nursing staff providing the touch, the benefits remain the same. The only exception is babies, who respond better to maternal touch.

Researchers also discovered that the frequency of touch plays a significant role in its therapeutic effects. The more frequent the contact, the greater the benefit. Additionally, caresses and massages on the face and scalp were found to be more beneficial than those on other parts of the body.

The study highlights the importance of developing touch-based therapeutic interventions for the population to improve and maintain health. Even in situations of social isolation, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, alternative forms of contact, such as specialized robots or weighted blankets, can provide similar physical benefits, though they may not have the same mental health benefits as human touch.

While the majority of studies included in the research focused on women, the effects of physical contact on different genders remain to be fully explored. However, the overarching conclusion is clear – physical contact is beneficial for overall health and well-being.
