Diseases appear to share a deep correlation
There is a mirror image relationship between the risk of developing epilepsy in patients with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s and that of developing Alzheimer’s in people with a genetic predisposition to epilepsy.
This was reported by a study published in Neurology by a team from the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou led by Jiali Pu, who explains: “Our results support the fact that more efforts should be made to screen for epilepsy in people with Alzheimer’s disease, and also to understand the impact of seizures on those coping with these two challenging neurological conditions.’
Chinese researchers analyzed the genome-wide genetic variation of 111,326 people with Alzheimer’s disease and 677,663 people without the disease through a genome-wide association study.
